The Cost of CO2 Resurfacing What You Actually Pay For

Roughly $1,500 to $4,000 a session — here is what moves that number, and why two quotes for the “same” treatment can differ by double.

CO2 resurfacing is one of the most effective things we can do for wrinkles, scars and sun damage — and one of the most expensive. Quotes in the Seattle area vary enormously, which usually means the quote is measuring different things, not that one clinic is cheating you. Here is what actually drives the number.

What CO2 resurfacing actually does

A CO2 laser removes damaged outer layers of skin in a controlled way, so the skin heals with fresh cells. The same injury signal drives collagen production over the following weeks and months, which is where most of the firming comes from.

It is ablative, which is why it works and also why it requires real downtime. Settings are adjustable — a light resurfacing and a deep one are the same device doing very different jobs, at very different prices and recoveries.

What you should expect to pay

In this market, roughly $1,500 to $4,000 per session is the usual range. Where you land inside it depends on five things:

  • Treatment area. Full face costs more than a targeted area such as around the eyes or mouth.
  • Depth and number of sessions. One deep pass and three lighter ones are different plans with different totals. Ask which you are being quoted.
  • Who is holding the device. Ablative resurfacing is unforgiving of poor technique. Experience costs more and is worth paying for.
  • The device itself. Newer platforms often mean better comfort and more precise control, and that shows in the price.
  • What the quote includes. Numbing, post-care products, and follow-up visits are sometimes bundled and sometimes not.

That last point is where most confusing price gaps come from. A $1,600 quote and a $3,200 quote may be the same treatment with a different number of things attached. Ask for the inclusions in writing before comparing.

Is it worth the money?

For the right problem, yes — it addresses texture, fine lines, acne scarring and sun damage in a single treatment course, and the collagen response is durable in a way that most non-ablative options are not.

For the wrong problem, no. If your main concern is volume loss or tissue descent, resurfacing will not fix it, and you will have paid for downtime you did not need. A proper consultation should say so.

Preparing well

  • Have a real consultation covering your skin history, medications, and any history of cold sores or keloid scarring.
  • Stay out of the sun for at least two weeks beforehand. Tanned skin raises the risk of pigment problems.
  • Expect to be asked to pause certain medications — blood thinners among them — but only on your clinician’s instruction, never on your own.
  • Follow the pre-treatment skincare you are given. It genuinely affects how you heal.

Recovery, honestly

Expect redness, swelling and peeling, with the intensity and duration scaling with how deep the treatment went. Plan the downtime into your calendar rather than hoping to work through it.

Sun protection afterwards is not optional. Freshly resurfaced skin pigments easily, and a few careless days can undo the result you paid for.

Choosing where to have it done

Ask who is performing the treatment and what their training on that specific device is. Ask to see their own before-and-after photographs, not the manufacturer’s. Ask what happens, and what it costs, if you need a touch-up. A clinic comfortable with those questions is usually the right one.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions will I need? It depends on depth and on what you are treating. Scarring usually takes more than fine lines. You should be given a plan, not a single number.

How long do results last? The collagen response builds over months and is long-lasting, but it does not stop you ageing. Sun protection and skincare determine how long you keep it.

Is it painful? Topical numbing is standard. Most people describe heat and stinging rather than sharp pain.

Can I have it on any skin tone? Darker skin tones carry a higher risk of pigment change and need a more cautious approach. This is a conversation to have specifically, not to assume.
